Intensified suburban forms of development, catering to vehicular convenience, have resulted in a proliferation of lighting to illuminate commercial centers, parking lots, improved roadway systems, gas stations, recreational facilities etc. This has lead to a diminution of undeveloped and natural environments and their dark-sky characteristic.

Associated increases in energy use and lighting infrastructure costs is of great concern to many who question the sustainability of existing development practices and the desirability of the visual effects of added sky-glow.
